How the Amazon FBA profit calculation works
Every FBA sale pays Amazon two main fees. The referral fee is a commission on the selling price, and the FBA fulfillment fee covers picking, packing and shipping the order. Your own costs are what you paid for the product, plus getting it to Amazon's warehouse and preparing it. This calculator subtracts all of them from the selling price to give profit per unit, then compares profit with what you invested to give ROI.
For large standard items over 3 lb, the fee rises by about $0.08 for every extra 4 oz, up to 20 lb. Large bulky and extra-large items use a base fee plus a per-pound rate. For those, paste the fee from Seller Central into the override box.

A worked example
A kitchen gadget sells for $24.99, weighs 12 oz packed and is large standard. It costs $5.50 to make, $0.60 per unit to ship to Amazon and $0.25 to prep.
- Referral fee: 15% × $24.99 = $3.75
- FBA fee: $4.20 × 1.035 = $4.35
- Landed cost: $5.50 + $0.60 + $0.25 = $6.35
- Net profit: $24.99 − $3.75 − $4.35 − $6.35 = $10.54
- Margin: 42.2% · ROI: 166%
Before you scale, take off advertising (often 10–20% of sales for new listings) and storage. If the numbers still work, the product has room to grow.
Tips to lower your Amazon fees
- Shrink the packaging. Dropping from large standard to small standard, or into a lower weight band, can save $0.50–$1+ per unit.
- Watch the $10 and $50 price lines. FBA rates change at those price points, so a few cents of pricing can change your fee band.
- Keep enough stock. Low-inventory-level fees apply when you hold too little inventory relative to sales.
- Avoid long-term storage. Slow sellers pick up aged-inventory surcharges, which can wipe out a good ROI.
Frequently asked questions
How much does Amazon take from each FBA sale?
Two main fees. The first is a referral fee, which is 15% of the selling price in most categories and 8% in some, such as electronics. The second is an FBA fulfillment fee based on size and weight. In 2026 it starts at about $3.44 for a small, light item, including the fuel surcharge.
On a typical $25 item that is roughly $7–$9 in total, or 28–35% of the price, before storage and inbound fees.
What is a good ROI for Amazon FBA?
Many private-label and wholesale sellers look for at least 30% ROI per unit (profit divided by product plus inbound cost). Online arbitrage sellers often target 50% or more because their volumes are smaller.
Judge ROI together with margin and how fast the item sells. A 25% ROI product that sells every day can beat a 100% ROI product that sits in storage for months.
How is the FBA fulfillment fee calculated?
Amazon first assigns a size tier from the item's packaged dimensions and weight: small standard, large standard, large bulky or extra-large. It then charges a fee for the shipping weight band within that tier.
For large standard and bigger items, the shipping weight is the greater of the actual weight and the dimensional weight (L × W × H ÷ 139). The fee also depends on the price band (under $10, $10–$50, over $50). From April 2026 a 3.5% fuel and logistics surcharge is added.
What fees does this calculator not include?
It does not include monthly storage fees, aged-inventory surcharges, low-inventory-level fees, returns processing, the $39.99/month Professional selling plan or advertising.
Add an average of these per unit into the Prep & other costs box if you want them included. For the exact fee on a specific ASIN, use the FBA Revenue Calculator or the Fee Preview report in Seller Central.
